Court Orders Immediate Release of Nigerian Singer Speed Darlington Amid Defamation Case with Burna Boy


The Federal High Court has mandated the immediate release of Nigerian singer Darlington Okoye, popularly known as Speed Darlington or Akpi, who was detained following a defamation complaint by fellow artist Burna Boy.



Background of the Case

Speed Darlington, aged 39, was arrested on October 4, 2024, over allegations of defamation and cyberstalking directed at award-winning artist Damini Ogulu, known professionally as Burna Boy.

Court's Ruling

On December 23, 2024, Justice M. S. Liman of the Federal High Court ruled that Darlington's arrest and continued detention were unlawful, constituting a gross violation of his fundamental human rights, including dignity, liberty, expression, and movement, as enshrined in Chapter IV of the Nigerian Constitution.

The court ordered the Inspector General of Police to either charge Darlington in court within 48 hours or release him unconditionally.Despite this directive, the Nigerian police did not comply, prompting further legal action.

Legal Representation and Advocacy

Human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju, representing Speed Darlington, publicly criticized the police's non-compliance, describing it as a blatant disregard for judicial authority.He emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law and protecting individual rights.In response to the police's inaction, the court reiterated its order for Darlington's immediate release pending the hearing of the substantive matter.Additionally, the court appointed Abubakar Marshal, Esq., to act as surety for the singer.

The case has garnered significant public attention, with notable figures like socialite Cubana Chief Priest expressing support for Speed Darlington.Chief Priest pledged to leverage his influence to secure the singer's release, highlighting the broader implications of the case on freedom of expression within Nigeria's entertainment industry.

The court has scheduled a hearing for the substantive matter on January 13, 2025. Speed Darlington's legal team remains committed to pursuing justice and holding accountable those responsible for his unlawful detention.
