Nigerian President Bola Tinubu Ranked Among World's Most Corrupt Leaders

In December 2024, the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) released its annual rankings, placing Nigerian President Bola Tinubu as the third most corrupt leader globally.

OCCRP's 2024 Corruption Rankings

The OCCRP, a consortium of investigative journalists and activists, annually highlights individuals who have significantly advanced criminal activities and exacerbated poverty. In the 2024 rankings, Kenyan President William Ruto received the highest number of votes, followed by former Indonesian President Joko Widodo.President Tinubu secured the third position.Notably, the "Person of the Year" title was awarded to Bashar al-Assad, the recently ousted Syrian leader who fled to Russia.

Allegations Against President Tinubu

President Tinubu, aged 72, has faced numerous allegations of corruption throughout his political career:

  • Governorship of Lagos State (1999-2007): During his tenure as governor, Tinubu was accused of amassing significant wealth for himself and his family, raising concerns about the sources of his income.

  • Presidency (Assumed Office in May 2023): Shortly after his inauguration, Tinubu awarded a multitrillion-naira road project, the Abuja-Calabar route, to a company run by his son. This project, Nigeria's most ambitious infrastructure endeavor to date, sparked fears of continued nepotism and corruption under his administration.

  • Historical Allegations: Tinubu's past includes allegations of involvement in narcotics trafficking during his time in Chicago, as well as accusations of certificate forgery. These issues have resurfaced, influencing perceptions of his integrity.

Nigeria's Corruption Perception

Nigeria's struggle with corruption is well-documented.In the 2023 Corruption Perception Index (CPI) released by Transparency International, Nigeria improved its ranking by five places, moving from 150th to 145th out of 180 countries, with a score of 25 out of 100. Despite this slight improvement, the nation remains among the countries perceived to have high levels of public sector corruption.

Economic Implications

The economic ramifications of corruption in Nigeria are profound:

  • Debt Increase: Nigeria's total public debt rose from N87.3 trillion in May 2023 to N134 trillion by June 2024, indicating a significant financial burden on the nation.

  • Economic Reforms: President Tinubu implemented economic reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidies and allowing the naira to depreciate. While aimed at addressing economic challenges, these measures have led to increased poverty and a severe cost-of-living crisis.

Public Perception and Criticism

Public perception of President Tinubu's commitment to combating corruption has been skeptical. In June 2023, he suspended the head of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa, based on allegations of abuse of office.Critics argue that such actions may be politically motivated rather than genuine efforts to tackle corruption.

Conclusion

The OCCRP's ranking of President Bola Tinubu as the third most corrupt leader globally underscores ongoing concerns about corruption in Nigeria.Despite some improvements in international corruption indices, allegations against high-ranking officials continue to tarnish the nation's reputation.Addressing these challenges requires a concerted effort to promote transparency, enforce anti-corruption measures, and rebuild public trust in governance.
