Catholic Priest Arrested for Fatal Shooting of Teenage Boy Over Knockout During New Year Mass in Imo

A Catholic priest, Rev. Fr. Joseph Enyinnaya, has been arrested in Imo State after a tragic incident during a New Year Mass on January 1, 2025, at St. Columbus Catholic Church in Amaimo, Ikeduru Local Government Area. The priest allegedly shot and killed a teenage boy after he threw knockouts inside the church.

According to eyewitnesses, a group of boys were disturbing the mass by setting off knockouts, prompting the priest to intervene. In an attempt to disperse them, Rev. Fr. Enyinnaya fired a shot into the air. However, reports suggest that while handling the firearm, it accidentally discharged, striking one of the boys and leading to his tragic death.

This shocking event has raised concerns about safety during religious gatherings, especially in areas where firecrackers are common. Authorities have since arrested the priest, and investigations into the incident are ongoing. The community remains in shock over the loss of a young life, and questions surrounding the handling of firearms in sensitive environments continue to emerge.
