Ekiti State Government Refutes Claims of Sharia Court Establishment

January 23, 2025

In response to circulating reports, the Ekiti State Government has unequivocally denied the existence or establishment of a Sharia Court or any analogous arbitration panel within its jurisdiction.

Official Clarification

The Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice of Ekiti State, Dayo Apata (SAN), issued a formal statement addressing these claims. He emphasized that the state's judicial framework does not encompass any Sharia Court or similar entity. Apata elaborated that matters pertaining to arbitration and mediation are quasi-judicial in nature and are effectively managed by the state's existing legal institutions.

Existing Legal Structures

Apata highlighted that Ekiti State's judiciary comprises Customary Courts, the Customary Court of Appeal, and the High Court. These bodies are proficient in handling issues related to Islamic, Christian, and traditional marriages, as well as inheritance disputes. He noted that the Sharia Courts operational in northern Nigeria are equivalent to the Customary Courts in the southern regions, including Ekiti State. Consequently, the current legal structures are deemed sufficient for addressing customary matters without necessitating the introduction of a Sharia Court.

The Attorney-General underscored the government's dedication to maintaining peaceful coexistence among all residents. He cautioned against actions or narratives that could disrupt societal harmony, especially in light of the approaching 2026 governorship elections. Apata urged religious leaders and community members to remain vigilant and avoid being manipulated by political actors seeking to exploit religious sentiments for personal gain.

Public Reassurance

This clarification aims to dispel any misconceptions and reassure the public of the state's unwavering commitment to upholding its established legal system. The government remains steadfast in its resolve to ensure justice and equity for all citizens, irrespective of religious or cultural affiliations.

The Ekiti State Government's prompt response to these unfounded claims reflects its proactive stance in preserving the integrity of its judicial system and fostering unity among its diverse populace. By addressing and debunking such misinformation, the state reinforces its dedication to transparency, justice, and communal harmony.
