Ekiti State Refutes Claims of Sharia Court Integration into Judicial System

In a decisive move to quash circulating rumors, the Ekiti State Government has categorically denied the establishment of any Sharia Court or the proposed Independent Sharia Arbitration Panel within its judicial framework. This clarification was issued in Ado-Ekiti on Thursday by the State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Dayo Apata (SAN), who emphasized the state's commitment to its existing legal structures.

Clarification from the Attorney-General

Mr. Apata addressed recent reports suggesting the introduction of Sharia-based judicial bodies in Ekiti State. He stated unequivocally that the state's judiciary comprises Customary Courts, the Customary Court of Appeal, and the High Court, all of which are fully equipped to handle matters pertaining to Islamic, Christian, and traditional marriages, as well as inheritance issues. He noted, "Arbitration and/or mediation issues are quasi-judicial matters which are regulated by law in the state." citeturn0search3

Existing Judicial Framework

The Attorney-General elaborated on the state's judicial structure, highlighting that the existing courts have been effectively managing cases across various cultural and religious contexts without any conflict or agitation. He drew a parallel between the Sharia Courts in Northern Nigeria and the Customary Courts in the Southern regions, including Ekiti State. In the North, appeals from Sharia Courts proceed to the Sharia Court of Appeal, while in Ekiti, the Customary Courts and the Customary Court of Appeal serve a similar function for customary cases.

Public Reassurance

This clarification aims to reassure the public and dispel any misconceptions about the state's legal system. The government urges residents to rely on official communications for accurate information and to avoid spreading unverified reports that could lead to unnecessary tension or misunderstanding within the community.

Ekiti State remains steadfast in its dedication to upholding a judicial system that reflects its cultural diversity and commitment to justice. The government continues to prioritize the effective resolution of legal matters through its established courts, ensuring that all residents receive fair and impartial adjudication.
