How Obasanjo Blocked Akwa Ibom’s Electricity Revolution After Ibom Power Plant Success – Victor Attah
In a startling revelation, former Akwa Ibom State Governor, Obong Victor Attah, has accused ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo of obstructing the distribution of electricity to Akwa Ibom State, despite the state's successful construction of the Ibom Power Plant. This allegation sheds light on the intricate power dynamics and challenges within Nigeria's energy sector.
The Ibom Power Plant Initiative
The Ibom Power Plant, a gas-fired facility located in Ikot Abasi, was initiated during Attah's administration. Incorporated in January 2001, the plant was among Nigeria's pioneering independent power projects, aiming to bolster electricity supply in Akwa Ibom State and beyond.
Alleged Federal Obstruction
Despite the state's efforts, Attah claims that the federal government, under Obasanjo's leadership, hindered the plant's operations. This alleged interference prevented the distribution of the generated power to local communities, undermining the state's objective of achieving energy self-sufficiency.
Current Energy Challenges in Akwa Ibom
The repercussions of these past challenges are evident today. In December 2024, Governor Umo Eno declared a state of emergency in the power sector, highlighting the pressing need for consistent electricity to drive economic growth under the state's ARISE Agenda. The governor also unveiled plans to convene a Power Summit in early 2025 to address these persistent issues.
Financial Strains and Leadership Changes
Compounding the state's energy woes is a substantial N40 billion debt owed to Acugas, the gas supplier for the Ibom Power Plant. This financial strain has led to operational challenges, including a three-day power outage that severely impacted residents and businesses. In response, Governor Eno dismissed the Managing Director of Ibom Power Company Limited, Engr. Meyen Etukudo, citing his failure to leverage his expertise to improve the energy sector in alignment with the state's development goals.
The allegations made by Obong Victor Attah underscore the complex interplay between state initiatives and federal oversight in Nigeria's energy sector. As Akwa Ibom State grapples with these challenges, the need for collaborative and sustainable solutions becomes increasingly imperative to ensure reliable power supply for its citizens.
