NLC Urges Withdrawal of Tax Reform Bills and Advocates for Wage Review
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called for the immediate withdrawal of the Tax Reform Bills submitted by President Bola Tinubu to the National Assembly. In a New Year message, NLC President Joe Ajaero emphasized the need for inclusive stakeholder engagement in formulating tax policies and highlighted the union's commitment to advocating for improved worker welfare in 2025.
Call for Inclusive Tax Policy Formulation
The NLC has expressed concerns over the proposed Tax Reform Bills, particularly criticisms from northern regions labeling them as detrimental to economic growth. Ajaero stated that creating a comprehensive national tax policy requires collaboration across all sectors to ensure transparency and acceptance. He urged the federal government to withdraw the current bills to allow for broader consultation with key national stakeholders.
To facilitate the development of a widely accepted tax framework, the NLC announced plans to host a national dialogue in Ibadan in January 2025.This event aims to bring together various stakeholders to co-create a new national tax law that supports national development objectives.
Advocacy for Worker Welfare and Wage Review
In addition to tax policy concerns, the NLC emphasized the importance of prioritizing citizen welfare. The union called on the government to implement policies that enhance access to essential services such as food, healthcare, housing, education, transportation, and security. Ajaero reiterated the NLC's commitment to negotiating an upward wage review to address the economic challenges faced by workers, stressing the need for compliance with the 2024 National Minimum Wage Act.
The NLC criticized the increasing use of force in interactions with unions, warning that such actions could disrupt industrial harmony. The union urged the government to engage in meaningful social dialogue and uphold agreements with trade unions to maintain peace in the labor sector.
As Nigeria enters 2025, the NLC remains steadfast in its commitment to advocating for policies that promote inclusive development and enhance worker welfare. The union's call for the withdrawal of the Tax Reform Bills underscores the need for transparent and inclusive policy formulation processes that consider the interests of all stakeholders.
