The family of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has accused President Bola Tinubu of reneging on a pre-election agreement to facilitate Kanu's release.Kanunta Kanu, Nnamdi Kanu's brother, revealed that during the lead-up to the 2023 presidential election, he met with Seyi Tinubu, the President's son, to discuss this matter.



Pre-Election Agreement Details

According to Kanunta, a former governor arranged the meeting with Seyi Tinubu, which took place in Abuja.Seyi purportedly conveyed that the meeting had his father's endorsement and that any agreements reached would be binding on then-candidate Bola Ahmed Tinubu.The central understanding was that IPOB would refrain from boycotting the 2023 elections or engaging in civil disobedience, in exchange for Nnamdi Kanu's release upon Tinubu's election as President.

IPOB's Compliance and Expectations

Following the meeting, Kanunta communicated the agreement to his brother, Nnamdi Kanu, who reaffirmed IPOB's commitment not to disrupt the electoral process.This stance was consistent with IPOB's longstanding policy of non-interference in elections. Additionally, during a campaign visit to Owerri, Bola Tinubu publicly reiterated his commitment to facilitating Kanu's release if elected, which the Kanu family interpreted as a reaffirmation of the agreement.

Allegations of Unfulfilled Promises

Despite these assurances, Kanunta expressed frustration that nearly two years into President Tinubu's administration, Nnamdi Kanu remains in detention without any formal charges.He highlighted that over three months have passed since Justice Binta Nyako recused herself from the case, yet no new judge has been assigned, leading to a prolonged legal limbo.

Nnamdi Kanu's continued detention has been a contentious issue, drawing criticism from various human rights organizations and international observers.The alleged agreement between the Kanu family and the Tinubu campaign underscores the complex interplay between political negotiations and legal processes in Nigeria.
