President Tinubu Affirms Commitment to Local Government Autonomy

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration's dedication to implementing financial autonomy for local governments, emphasizing the importance of grassroots development in Nigeria.



Collaboration with State Governors

During a New Year homage at his Ikoyi residence in Lagos, President Tinubu addressed the 36 state governors, dispelling rumors of discord over local government autonomy.He stated, "We will not fight within us. I will drive the change. You control your local governments. You can restore hope by effectively fulfilling what the people expect at the grassroots level.

The President underscored the necessity of collaboration between federal and state governments to enhance local governance, stating, "Nobody wants to take them away from you, but we need collaboration. Let’s do it together and ensure Nigeria is better off for it.

Supreme Court Judgment on Local Government Autonomy

The Supreme Court recently affirmed the financial autonomy of local governments, a decision hailed as a significant milestone in grassroots development.The judgment mandates direct allocation of funds to local government accounts, eliminating state-level interference.

Implications for Grassroots Development

Implementing local government autonomy is expected to address several challenges:

  • Enhanced Service Delivery: Direct funding will enable local governments to improve infrastructure, healthcare, and education at the grassroots level.

Stakeholders, including the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), have urged the Federal Government to expedite the implementation of the Supreme Court's judgment.NULGE President Hakeem Ambali emphasized that local government autonomy would revitalize rural economies and enhance service delivery.
