In a decisive stance on the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Finland’s President Alexander Stubb has reaffirmed his country’s steadfast support for Ukraine and its democratically elected leader, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Stubb has also issued a strong rebuke of former U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent statements, emphasizing the necessity of a united front against Russian aggression.



Finland’s Commitment to Ukraine’s Sovereignty

Since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Finland has been one of Kyiv’s most reliable allies. Demonstrating this commitment, President Stubb visited Kyiv on April 3, 2024, where he and President Zelenskyy signed a landmark 10-year security cooperation agreement. The deal strengthens Finland’s political, military, and economic support for Ukraine, ensuring long-term stability and aid in reconstruction efforts.

“Now is the time to take decisive, long-term measures to secure Ukraine’s future,” Stubb stated, reaffirming Finland’s dedication to standing with Ukraine for the long haul.

As part of this commitment, Finland has delivered 23 military aid packages to Ukraine, with the latest—valued at €188 million—providing essential air defense systems, heavy munitions, and other critical resources. “We Finns don’t just talk—we take action,” Stubb emphasized, highlighting Finland’s proactive role.

Rebuking Trump’s Remarks and Advocating for Meaningful Peace Talks

President Stubb has also addressed controversial remarks by Donald Trump regarding the ongoing war. Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos on January 22, 2025, Stubb underscored the critical role of Ukraine and its European allies in any peace negotiations.



“No peace can be reached in Ukraine without Ukraine itself, and no settlement should be made without European allies playing a key role,” Stubb stated, cautioning against diplomatic shortcuts that could undermine Ukraine’s sovereignty (aa.com.tr).

Condemning Russia’s Imperialist Ambitions

President Stubb has been unequivocal in his condemnation of Russia’s war, labeling it an imperialistic assault on Ukrainian sovereignty and a blatant violation of international law.

To intensify pressure on Russia, Stubb has called for stronger sanctions and the freezing of Russian assets to cripple Moscow’s war machine. Drawing from Finland’s own historical experience with Russian aggression, Stubb stressed the necessity of providing Ukraine with the military means to negotiate from a position of strength.

“We must rearm Ukraine and apply maximum pressure on Russia,” he asserted, reinforcing the urgency of continued Western support (huffingtonpost.es).
