Lagos Lawmakers Issue Apology to President Tinubu Over Ex-Speaker Obasa's Removal

In a move that has sent shockwaves through Lagos State's political landscape, members of the Lagos State House of Assembly have formally apologized to President Bola Tinubu following the controversial removal of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa. This apology has drawn attention to the intricate power dynamics at play within the state’s political arena, highlighting the delicate balance between the legislative and executive branches of government.

The Impeachment Drama: A Political Storm Unleashed

On January 13, 2025, Mudashiru Obasa was removed from his position as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly after a majority vote by the lawmakers. The decision to impeach him came in the wake of serious allegations, including misconduct, abuse of office, and financial misappropriations. The impeachment marked the end of Obasa’s influential tenure, which had spanned several years.

In his place, the House swiftly appointed Mojisola Meranda, the former Deputy Speaker, as the new Speaker. However, this move triggered an immediate political storm. Within days, the lawmakers found themselves at odds with the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos, including Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat. It became clear that the impeachment process had occurred without sufficient consultation with key party leaders—a significant misstep that would have lasting consequences.

The Apology: A Step Toward Reconciliation

Amidst growing tensions, the Lagos House of Assembly convened an emergency meeting to address the crisis. Following discussions with the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) of the Lagos APC, the lawmakers issued a formal apology to President Tinubu, acknowledging the procedural missteps in the impeachment of Obasa. This apology came in two parts:

  1. The First Letter: In this letter, the lawmakers expressed regret over initiating the impeachment process without first consulting with relevant party leaders. They committed to transforming Obasa’s removal into a resignation to avoid further fallout.

  2. The Second Letter: This letter, signed by lawmakers from Lagos West, endorsed Mojisola Meranda as the new Speaker. The lawmakers also pledged to set aside the zoning formula that would have ordinarily dictated the succession process, choosing instead to allow Meranda to complete her term as Speaker.

Political Fallout: Deep Divisions within the APC

The impeachment and subsequent apology are symptomatic of deeper divisions within the APC in Lagos. Although Governor Sanwo-Olu and his deputy have maintained their support for the new Speaker, the removal of Obasa without proper consultation raised concerns within the GAC. Some influential party members have voiced criticism, stating that the decision undermined party unity and failed to respect the established processes within the APC.

The rift within the GAC is especially significant, as it highlights the ongoing struggle for dominance within Lagos State’s political hierarchy. While some factions argue that the impeachment was a necessary step for transparency and accountability, others view it as an unwarranted power grab, causing fractures within the ruling party.

In a dramatic turn of events, Mudashiru Obasa returned to Nigeria from a trip to the United States and immediately contested his impeachment. He dismissed the removal as illegal, vowing to challenge the decision through legal means. Obasa, who had enjoyed significant influence during his time as Speaker, questioned the process that led to his ousting and signaled his intent to reclaim his position.

This legal challenge has added further complexity to the already volatile political situation, as the matter is expected to unfold in court. Obasa’s supporters continue to rally behind him, arguing that the impeachment process was rushed and lacked the necessary procedural safeguards.

The apology from Lagos lawmakers to President Tinubu is a critical development in the ongoing saga surrounding Mudashiru Obasa’s removal. It reflects the delicate balance of power within the state’s political system, where both the legislative and executive branches must maintain harmony to ensure effective governance. However, the tensions exposed by this incident suggest that the road ahead may be fraught with political infighting and instability.

As the situation develops, it will be essential to monitor the legal challenges and the responses from key political figures. The outcome of these events could have far-reaching implications for the future of the APC in Lagos State and the state’s broader political landscape. One thing is certain: the battle for political supremacy in Lagos is far from over, and its ramifications will continue to shape the state's future for years to come.
