Sharia Council Condemns Unfulfilled Promises of Nigeria’s Muslim-Muslim Ticket

Introduction

The Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria (SCSN) has delivered a stark verdict on the performance of President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima’s administration, stating that the much-debated Muslim-Muslim ticket has failed to deliver on its promises. Despite initial optimism within the Muslim community, the council laments that the anticipated benefits have not materialized.

Unfulfilled Expectations of the Muslim-Muslim Leadership

Political Marginalization Amid High Hopes

The election of a President and Vice President of the same Islamic faith had raised expectations within the Muslim community. Many believed this leadership structure would foster inclusivity and justice for all, regardless of religious background. However, Sheikh Abdurrasheed Hadiyyatullah, President of the SCSN, expressed deep disappointment, stating:

"We have seen Nigerians vote for people of the same Islamic faith into the Presidency without turning the country into an unceasing battlefield, but we have not seen justice and equity done to all communities, irrespective of their faith."

This sentiment reflects a growing sense of disillusionment, as Muslims across Nigeria feel sidelined rather than empowered. The council argues that despite the religious alignment in leadership, political representation and economic relief remain elusive.

South-West Muslims Face Religious Suppression

The SCSN also highlighted concerns regarding the treatment of Muslims in the South-West region, stating that certain forces are deliberately working to undermine their religious freedoms. Reports suggest that policies and societal biases continue to stifle the ability of South-West Muslims to practice their faith freely and establish Islamic institutions without interference. The council warned that fostering religious harmony requires acknowledging and addressing such imbalances.

Soaring Economic Hardships: A Growing Crisis

Beyond religious grievances, the council directed sharp criticism at the government’s handling of the economy. Inflation, unemployment, and widespread hardship have deepened frustrations, prompting the SCSN to demand immediate intervention. The council insists that the administration must prioritize economic reforms, social welfare programs, and measures to ease the suffering of ordinary Nigerians.

Call for Justice, Equity, and Reform

The SCSN’s critique underscores the urgent need for leadership that prioritizes justice, inclusivity, and economic stability. As Nigeria navigates these turbulent times, the Muslim community and the wider populace await decisive action to address their concerns. The council’s message is clear: symbolic representation is not enough—tangible progress must follow.
