In a bold move to revitalize Nigeria’s critical infrastructure, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially flagged off the reconstruction and expansion of the Lagos-Ibadan and Lagos-Sagamu expressways. Project Scope and Key Features

The reconstruction encompasses Section One of the Lagos-Ibadan Dual Carriageway and Section One of the Lagos-Sagamu Expressway. To address congestion and improve efficiency, several infrastructural upgrades are included:

  • Underpasses at Kara, Wawa, Magboro, and Arepo to enhance pedestrian and vehicular flow.
  • Flyover Bridges at Kilometer 16 (near the Mountain of Fire Ministries) and Kilometer 37 (Makun, near Sagamu) to reduce bottlenecks.
  • Pedestrian Bridges at Arepo, Magboro, NASFAT, Deeper Life, and Redemption Camp to ensure safety.
  • Extended Road Expansion covering the remaining 60-kilometer stretch of the Sagamu-Benin Expressway, from the Sagamu Interchange to Itele.

This comprehensive upgrade is designed to accommodate increasing traffic demands and ensure a smoother transportation network for commuters and businesses.

As Nigeria’s busiest highway, the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway serves as a vital economic corridor, linking Lagos—the nation’s commercial hub—to 17 southern states. Its modernization is expected to:

  • Boost trade and commerce, facilitating the seamless movement of goods across the region.

  • Phase One: Construction of underpasses and flyovers over a total of 12 kilometers (two lanes each, totaling 24 km).
  • Phase Two: Extension of 48 kilometers (two lanes) from Iperu to Ijebu-Ode, forming part of the Sagamu-Ore Expressway.

By prioritizing critical sections, the government aims to alleviate current traffic bottlenecks while paving the way for long-term transportation efficiency.

  • Create between 36,000 to 82,000 direct and indirect jobs, stimulating local employment.
