President Tinubu Applauds NNPCL for Warri Refinery Reopening

President Bola Tinubu has lauded the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) for successfully recommencing operations at the Warri Refining and Petrochemical Company (WRPC).This achievement marks a significant milestone in Nigeria's pursuit of energy self-sufficiency and economic revitalization.

Warri Refinery's Operational Resumption

After years of inactivity, the WRPC has resumed operations, currently functioning at 60% of its 125,000 barrels per day (bpd) capacity. This development follows the recent reactivation of the 60,000 bpd Port Harcourt Refinery in November 2024. The WRPC is set to produce and store essential petroleum products, including Straight Run Kerosene (SRK), Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), and both heavy and light Naphtha.

Presidential Commendation

President Tinubu expressed profound satisfaction with the refinery's reopening, stating, "The restart of Warri Refinery today brings joy and gladness to me and Nigerians. This will further strengthen the hope and confidence of Nigerians for a greater and better future that we promised. He also praised the NNPCL's leadership, particularly Group CEO Mele Kyari, for their dedication to restoring Nigeria's status as a leading oil-producing nation.

Strategic Imperatives for Energy Security

The recommencement of operations at the Warri Refinery is a pivotal component of President Tinubu's comprehensive strategy to enhance Nigeria's energy security.By increasing domestic refining capacity, the nation aims to reduce dependence on imported petroleum products, thereby stabilizing the economy and ensuring a consistent energy supply.

Looking ahead, President Tinubu has directed the NNPCL to expedite repair work on the Kaduna Refinery and the second 150,000 bpd refinery in Port Harcourt.Restoring these facilities to optimal capacity is critical to consolidating Nigeria’s position as a global energy provider.

Economic and Industrial Benefits

The revitalization of WRPC is expected to significantly boost Nigeria's industrial output, create jobs, and reduce the nation's import dependency on refined petroleum products.By focusing on strategic outputs like SRK and AGO, the refinery aims to meet domestic demands and enhance energy stability.

The reopening of the Warri Refinery signifies a transformative period in Nigeria's energy sector.Under President Tinubu's leadership, the nation's commitment to achieving energy security and economic prosperity is evident. The administration's focus on rehabilitating critical infrastructure underscores its dedication to positioning Nigeria as a hub for crude oil refining in Africa.
