Social Media Activist 'VeryDarkMan' Admits to Fabricating ₦180 Million Theft to Highlight Misinformation

In a recent development, social media activist Martin Otse, popularly known as 'VeryDarkMan', confessed to orchestrating a false narrative about ₦180 million allegedly missing from his NGO's account.

This deliberate fabrication aimed to expose how quickly unverified information spreads on social media platforms.

The Fabricated Incident

VeryDarkMan initially claimed that hackers had stolen ₦180 million from his NGO's account, a statement that garnered significant attention and mixed reactions online. However, he later revealed that this claim was a strategic stunt designed to demonstrate the ease with which misinformation can proliferate on social media.

Motivations Behind the Stunt

In a video posted on his Instagram account, VeryDarkMan explained his rationale:

"I deliberately did it to show you people that you are stupid... We are in a country where anything said on social media, nobody bothers to check, nobody bothers to investigate."

He expressed frustration over the public's readiness to accept and disseminate unverified information without critical analysis.

The activist's revelation sparked widespread debate. While some individuals supported his message about digital literacy, others criticized his approach as deceptive and manipulative. The incident underscores the need for critical thinking and verification of information before accepting and sharing it on social media platforms.

VeryDarkMan's stunt serves as a stark reminder of the pervasive issue of misinformation on social media. It highlights the importance of verifying information and approaching online narratives with a critical mindset to prevent the spread of false information.
