The Chinese Consulate General in Lagos recently hosted a vibrant celebration of the 2025 Spring Festival, also known as the Chinese New Year, underscoring the deepening cultural exchange between China and Nigeria.The event, themed "One World One Spring Huaxing Shines," took place on January 25, 2025, and featured a rich tapestry of traditional Chinese customs and performances.



A Global Celebration of Chinese Heritage

The Spring Festival, China's most significant traditional holiday, symbolizes reunion and hope.In recent years, its global recognition has surged.Notably, in 2023, the festival was designated as a United Nations floating holiday, and by 2024, it was inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.These milestones highlight the festival's expanding international influence and its role in fostering cross-cultural understanding.

Strengthening China-Nigeria Relations Through Cultural Exchange

Ms. Yan Yuqing, the Consul General of the People's Republic of China in Lagos, emphasized the festival's significance in enhancing mutual understanding between the Chinese and Nigerian people.She remarked, "The Spring Festival has become a cultural bond that strengthens mutual understanding and trust, and deepens people-to-people exchanges between China and Nigeria.

The consulate's celebration included traditional activities such as pasting Spring Festival couplets, setting off fireworks, and sharing reunion meals. These customs reflect the spiritual essence of Chinese culture—harmony, concord, and peace—and express people's pursuit of a better life.

A Year of the Snake: Symbolism and Future Prospects

The 2025 Chinese New Year ushers in the Year of the Snake, a symbol in Chinese culture associated with longevity, good fortune, wisdom, and wealth.Ms. Yuqing highlighted the auspiciousness of this symbol, expressing optimism for the future of China-Nigeria relations.She stated that both nations will "comprehensively deepen the cooperation of the Belt and Road initiative" and partner in various fields such as politics, economy and trade, science and technology, education, and culture for mutual benefits.



Shared Celebrations and Charitable Endeavors

In addition to the cultural festivities, the consulate, in collaboration with the local Chinese community, has been actively involved in charitable projects in Nigeria. One notable initiative is the "Renewed Hope, Rebirth from the Light" charity project, which has provided cataract surgeries to over 300 Nigerian patients, helping them regain their eyesight.

As the melodies of traditional Chinese instruments intertwined with the rhythms of Nigerian drums during the celebration, it became evident that the Spring Festival in Lagos was more than just a cultural event; it was a testament to the enduring friendship and growing partnership between China and Nigeria.With shared aspirations for prosperity and mutual respect, both nations look forward to a future of continued collaboration and cultural exchange.
