In a landmark achievement, Commander Matuwo Iseoluwani Olufokunbi has become the first Nigerian-American to qualify as a nuclear engineer under the United States Navy Nuclear Propulsion Program.This historic milestone also positions him as the third Nigerian-born officer to command a U.S. Navy warship.
A Trailblazing Career
Commander Olufokunbi's naval journey began in January 2001 when he enlisted as an Electronic Technician.Demonstrating exceptional dedication and skill, he was accepted into the Seaman to Admiral Program and graduated from Old Dominion University in May 2008 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. Furthering his expertise, he completed the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program and earned a Master's in Engineering Management from Old Dominion University.
Assuming Command of USS Oak Hill
On January 17, 2025, Commander Olufokunbi took the helm of the USS Oak Hill (LSD 51), marking his ascent as the third Nigerian-born officer to command a U.S. Navy warship.The USS Oak Hill's official statement read: "Today, we bid farewell to CDR Jason Nowell as CDR Matuwo Olufokunbi assumed command of our Nation's Protector.This transition underscores the Navy's recognition of Olufokunbi's leadership and commitment.
