Federal Government Honors Legacy of Nigerian Flag Designer with ₦30 Million Donation to Akinkunmi Family

In a significant gesture of recognition, the Federal Government has bestowed a ₦30 million donation upon the family of the late Pa Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi, the visionary behind Nigeria's national flag. This act underscores the nation's appreciation for Akinkunmi's enduring contribution to its identity.

A Tribute to a National Icon

Pa Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi, affectionately known as "Mr. Flag Man," passed away on August 29, 2023, at the age of 87, following a brief illness. Born on May 10, 1936, in Ibadan, Oyo State, Akinkunmi's legacy is indelibly etched in Nigeria's history through his design of the national flag—a symbol of unity and pride.

The Genesis of the Nigerian Flag

In 1958, while studying electrical engineering at Norwood Technical College in London, Akinkunmi encountered an advertisement announcing a competition to design a flag for Nigeria ahead of its impending independence. Inspired, he crafted a design featuring two green vertical stripes flanking a central white stripe. The green represented Nigeria's lush agricultural heritage, while the white symbolized peace and unity. His submission was selected as the winning entry, and the flag was officially hoisted on October 1, 1960, marking Nigeria's sovereignty.

Government's Gesture of Appreciation

On January 31, 2025, the Federal Government, through the National Orientation Agency (NOA), presented a ₦30 million cheque to Akinkunmi's family. The Director-General of the NOA, accompanied by the Oyo State Director of the agency, made the official presentation, emphasizing that the donation was a token of appreciation for Akinkunmi's service to the nation.

Enduring Legacy

Akinkunmi's design has remained a steadfast emblem of Nigeria's identity for over six decades. His story serves as a testament to the profound impact that individual contributions can have on a nation's history. The Federal Government's recent donation not only honors his memory but also highlights the importance of recognizing and celebrating the achievements of national icons.

The ₦30 million donation to the family of Pa Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi reflects the nation's deep appreciation for the man whose creative vision gave Nigeria its cherished national flag. As the country continues to evolve, the legacy of "Mr. Flag Man" serves as a reminder of the enduring power of unity, peace, and national pride.
