Federal Government Increases NYSC Monthly Allowance to N77,000, Effective July 2024
Federal Government Increases NYSC Monthly Allowance to N77,000
In a significant move to enhance the welfare of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members, the Federal Government has approved an increase in their monthly allowance from N33,000 to N77,000.
This adjustment aligns with the enactment of the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024, which stipulates a new minimum wage of N70,000. The NYSC's monthly allowance increase is a direct response to this legislative change, aiming to provide financial relief to corps members.
Implementation Challenges
Despite the official approval, the disbursement of the increased allowance has faced delays due to funding issues. Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed, the NYSC Director General, has expressed concerns over the non-release of funds necessary for the implementation of the new allowance. He noted that both corps members and NYSC staff have been affected by this delay.
Government's Response
The Federal Government has acknowledged these challenges and is working to resolve the funding issues to ensure timely payment of the new allowance. The NYSC leadership remains optimistic that the increased stipends will soon be disbursed, providing much-needed support to corps members across the nation.
The increase in the monthly allowance is expected to significantly improve the financial well-being of corps members, enabling them to better manage living expenses during their service year. This initiative underscores the government's commitment to enhancing the welfare of young Nigerians contributing to national development through the NYSC program.
