Governor Seyi Makinde Officially Presents Staff of Office to New Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade – A Historic Moment for Oyo Kingdom

In a ceremony steeped in tradition and cultural significance, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State presented the Staff of Office to Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade, the newly appointed 46th Alaafin of Oyo, on January 13, 2025.

The event, held at the Executive Chamber of the Governor’s Office in Ibadan, was attended by dignitaries, traditional rulers, and citizens of Oyo, marking a pivotal moment in the Yoruba nation's history.

Governor Makinde emphasized the sanctity of the Alaafin's stool, declaring it a symbol of unity and cultural heritage for the entire Yoruba race.

He stated, "The Alaafin stool is very important not just to Oyo Town or Oyo State but the entire Yoruba race. Under my watch, I made it very clear that the stool would not be for sale. It is not a stool for us to toy with."

The governor also addressed controversies surrounding the selection process, warning that individuals attempting to destabilize the traditional institution would face prosecution.

He urged those involved to seek forgiveness from the new Alaafin, indicating a path to reconciliation.

Oba Owoade, in his acceptance speech, expressed gratitude to the governor, the Oyomesi (kingmakers), and the people of Oyo for their support.

He pledged to work towards the progress of Oyo Town, Oyo State, and the Yoruba nation, stating, "I pray that my reign shall bring unity to the Yoruba race wherever they may be around the world."

The ceremony concluded with the governor announcing that the official coronation would take place in four weeks, signaling the beginning of a new era for the Oyo Kingdom.

This historic event underscores the enduring importance of traditional institutions in Nigeria and their role in fostering unity and cultural preservation.
