IGP Egbetokun Clarifies Budget Presentation Controversy at National Assembly

On January 17, 2025, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun addressed concerns regarding the Nigeria Police Force's (NPF) 2025 budget presentation to the National Assembly.Contrary to circulating reports, the IGP clarified that the NPF did not submit two different budget proposals.Instead, two versions of the same budget were provided: a comprehensive document and an abridged version, both containing identical figures and facts. The abridged version employed simplified language to facilitate understanding.

The clarification came after an incident during the budget defense session with the Joint Committees on Police Affairs and Police Institutions.Senator Onyekachi Nwoebonyi of Ebonyi North, who arrived late to the session, referenced the comprehensive version while the IGP was presenting the abridged version.Despite explanations from other committee members about the prior agreement to use the abridged version, Senator Nwoebonyi refused to listen and abruptly left the session. The IGP described the incident as unnecessary drama that could have been avoided with better communication.

The IGP also highlighted significant challenges the NPF faces with budget allocations, including inadequate funding, the restrictive envelope budget system, and delays in fund releases. These issues impede the Force's ability to address its expanding responsibilities effectively. He called on the public to remain patient and supportive as the NPF remains committed to delivering exceptional service with professionalism and dedication.

This incident underscores the importance of clear communication and understanding during critical budget discussions, especially concerning national security and law enforcement funding.
