Lagos Assembly Affirms Legality of Obasa's Removal Amid Political Turmoil

In a decisive move that has sent ripples through Nigeria's political landscape, the Lagos State House of Assembly has steadfastly upheld the legality of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa's removal. This action, executed on January 13, 2025, was carried out in strict adherence to constitutional protocols, as emphasized by the Assembly members.

A Lawful Transition of Power

The Assembly's decision to depose Obasa was rooted in allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office. The process culminated in the election of Mojisola Meranda, the former Deputy Speaker, as the new Speaker. This transition marked a historic moment, as Meranda became the first female Speaker in the history of the Lagos State House of Assembly.

Assembly's Firm Stance

In a statement released by Hon. Ogundipe Stephen Olukayode, representing Oshodi State Constituency I, the Assembly reiterated its commitment to due process. The statement read, "The removal of former Speaker Hon. Mudashiru Obasa was conducted lawfully, in line with constitutional provisions." This assertion underscores the Assembly's dedication to upholding the rule of law amidst the political upheaval.

The removal of Obasa has not been without controversy. Critics have raised concerns about the procedural integrity of the impeachment process. However, the Assembly maintains that all actions taken were within the bounds of the law, aiming to preserve the institution's integrity and public trust.

Security Agencies Involvement

The political crisis deepened as the Department of State Services (DSS) detained two lawmakers in connection with Obasa's removal. The Assembly confirmed the release of these members and reiterated that the impeachment was a collective decision made in the state's best interest.

The Lagos State House of Assembly's unwavering stance on the legality of Obasa's removal highlights its commitment to constitutional governance. As the situation continues to evolve, the Assembly's actions serve as a testament to its dedication to upholding democratic principles and ensuring accountability within its ranks.
