Lagos State and Federal Government Collaborate on 68km Green Line Rail Project Connecting Victoria Island, Lekki, and Ajah
In a significant stride toward transforming Lagos' transportation infrastructure, the Lagos State Government, in partnership with the Federal Government and China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC), has embarked on the ambitious 68-kilometer Green Line Rail Project. This project aims to seamlessly connect key areas of Lagos, including Victoria Island (VI), Lekki, and Ajah, thereby enhancing the city's public transportation network.
The Green Line Rail Project is designed to run from the Lekki Free Zone to Marina, integrating with the existing Blue Line at Marina. This strategic alignment will link vital areas such as Victoria Island, Lekki, and Ajah, significantly reducing travel times and alleviating road congestion.Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu emphasized that the rail line is projected to carry over 500,000 passengers daily at launch, with capacity expected to exceed one million as demand increases.
Funding and Development
In the 2025 fiscal year, the Federal Government allocated N146.14 billion as counterpart funding for the Green Line Metro Rail Project. This allocation is part of the proposed N49.74 trillion budget and falls under the Ministry of Transport’s total allocation of N256.73 billion to support its initiatives. The funding will be managed by the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI), which will oversee the design, financing, and operation of the project in collaboration with CHEC.
Strategic Importance
The Green Line Rail Project is a cornerstone of Lagos' Strategic Transport Master Plan, which envisions a comprehensive metro rail system comprising six Light Rail Transit (LRT) lines. This initiative aims to provide modern, sustainable, and efficient transit solutions, offering a reliable alternative to Lagos’ often congested road networks. The successful implementation of the Green Line, alongside the existing Blue and Red Lines, will form the backbone of a fast, efficient, and interconnected Lagos.
The Green Line Rail Project is expected to be a catalyst for economic growth, connecting communities, reducing travel times, and enhancing the quality of life for millions.By providing a reliable and efficient mode of transportation, the project will facilitate economic activities, promote regional development, and improve access to essential services for residents of Victoria Island, Lekki, and Ajah.
The collaboration between the Lagos State Government, the Federal Government, and China Harbour Engineering Company on the 68-kilometer Green Line Rail Project marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of Lagos' transportation infrastructure. This project not only promises to transform the daily commute for thousands of residents but also stands as a testament to the commitment of all stakeholders to building a more connected and sustainable Lagos.
