NAFDAC Shuts Down Kaduna Warehouse Stocked With ₦75 Million Worth of Expired Products, Exposing Public Health Risks

In a decisive move to safeguard public health, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has sealed a warehouse in Kaduna State harboring expired food and cosmetic products valued at over ₦75 million.

The Sting Operation: Unveiling the Hazard

Acting on a tip-off from a vigilant citizen, NAFDAC's enforcement team conducted a meticulous surveillance operation at the warehouse located at PP2A Bayajidda Street, near Kano Road and New Ogbomosho Road in Kaduna.Upon inspection, the team uncovered a disturbing cache of expired items, including:

  • Biscuits
  • Dairy milk
  • Vegetable oil
  • Soft drinks
  • Detergents

Workers were caught red-handed, repackaging expired biscuits into sacks, presumably to reintroduce them into the market, thereby endangering unsuspecting consumers.

Culprit in Custody: Legal Proceedings Initiated

The managing director of the warehouse, identified as the orchestrator of this illicit operation, has been apprehended for interrogation.NAFDAC has vowed to impose stringent regulatory sanctions upon the conclusion of the investigation, setting a stern precedent for others engaged in similar nefarious activities.

This incident is not an isolated case.In November 2024, NAFDAC raided a warehouse in Oke-Afa, Okota, Lagos, uncovering over 14 rooms filled with unregistered and expired products, some contaminated by rodents, highlighting gross negligence and disregard for public safety.

Public Advisory: Vigilance Urged

NAFDAC is calling on the public to exercise caution when purchasing consumables and cosmetics.Consumers are advised to:

  • Check expiration dates meticulously.
  • Purchase products from reputable sources.
  • Report any suspicious products or activities to the nearest NAFDAC office.

The agency emphasizes that no regulated product should be manufactured, imported, exported, sold, or used in Nigeria unless duly registered under NAFDAC regulations.

This crackdown underscores NAFDAC's unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety and efficacy of products available to Nigerian consumers. The agency's proactive measures serve as a clarion call to all stakeholders in the supply chain to adhere strictly to regulatory standards, thereby safeguarding public health and maintaining consumer trust.
