Nigerian Military Enforces Comprehensive Drone Ban in North-East Amid Escalating Security Concerns

In a decisive move to bolster security across Nigeria's North-East region, the military's Joint Task Force, Operation Hadin Kai, has imposed an immediate and comprehensive ban on the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), commonly known as drones, within Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa states. This directive, issued by Air Commodore U.U. Idris, the Air Component Commander, underscores the escalating concerns over unauthorized drone operations and their potential exploitation by non-state actors and criminal elements.



Proliferation of Unauthorized Drone Usage

The rapid proliferation of drones for both domestic and commercial applications has introduced significant security challenges in the North-East. Government agencies and private individuals have been operating drones without obtaining the requisite approvals from the Air Component of Operation Hadin Kai, thereby exacerbating these concerns.

Air Commodore Idris emphasized that such unauthorized operations not only contravene existing regulations but also pose substantial risks to military installations and critical national infrastructure.He noted that non-state actors have increasingly employed drones for subversive and offensive activities, a trend observed in various global contexts.

Recent Incidents Highlighting Security Risks

Recent incidents have brought the issue of unauthorized drone operations into sharp focus. On January 7, 2025, a passenger aboard a non-governmental organization (NGO) flight from Maiduguri to Monguno was found in possession of a drone during a routine search at the helipad.The device was promptly confiscated, and an investigation is currently underway. Such occurrences underscore the pressing need for stringent control measures to prevent potential threats arising from unregulated drone usage.

Regulatory Measures and Enforcement

In response to these challenges, the Air Component of Operation Hadin Kai has reiterated its mandate to monitor and regulate all aerial platform operations, including both manned aircraft and drones, within the North-East Theatre. This initiative aims to deconflict the airspace, ensuring the safety and security of all operators across Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa states.

Air Commodore Idris has issued a stern warning that any breaches of this drone operation ban, regardless of their perceived insignificance, will be met with serious repercussions.He has called upon all stakeholders, including government entities, private individuals, and NGOs, to adhere strictly to this directive in the interest of regional safety and security.
