 Nigerian Senate Adjusts Plenary Schedule to Prioritize 2025 Budget Defense

In a strategic move to ensure thorough examination of the 2025 national budget, the Nigerian Senate has announced an adjustment to its plenary schedule. Originally slated to reconvene on January 28, 2025, the Senate has now extended its recess to February 4, 2025, to provide lawmakers with additional time for comprehensive budget defense sessions with various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).



Commitment to Rigorous Budget Scrutiny

Senate President Godswill Akpabio emphasized the importance of this extension, stating that the additional time will allow for meticulous scrutiny of the budget proposals submitted by the MDAs. He remarked, "This period is crucial for us to engage deeply with the budgetary submissions, ensuring that allocations align with our national priorities and deliver tangible benefits to Nigerians."

Challenges in the Housing Sector

A recent budget defense session highlighted challenges within the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development. Minister of State Yusuf Abdullahi-Ata, representing the substantive Minister Ahmed Dangiwa, acknowledged a lack of preparedness in distinguishing between the National Housing Scheme and President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda Housing Scheme.He admitted, "I still haven’t understood the difference between the two."This admission led to the postponement of the ministry's budget defense to allow for better preparation.







Senate's Dedication to National Development

In his address, President Akpabio underscored the Senate's dedication to national development, urging his colleagues to approach the budget defense with diligence and a focus on the nation's progress.He stated, "Our work here is not just about legislation; it is about shaping the future of our nation and leaving a legacy for generations to come.
