President Tinubu Directs Comprehensive Nationwide Road Maintenance Initiative

In a decisive move to enhance Nigeria's infrastructure, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has mandated the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) to undertake extensive maintenance of roads across the nation. This directive underscores the administration's commitment to improving transportation networks and fostering economic growth.

Affirmation of Commitment to South East Road Infrastructure

Dr. Kenneth Ugbala, FERMA board member representing the South East zone, emphasized that the region's roads are receiving substantial attention under President Tinubu's leadership. Addressing concerns of regional neglect, Dr. Ugbala stated that such claims are unfounded and highlighted ongoing projects as evidence of the government's dedication.

Ongoing Road Projects in the South East

Significant road construction and maintenance efforts are underway in the South East, including:

  • Enugu-Onitsha Road: Currently under construction, this vital corridor enhances connectivity between major economic hubs.

  • 9th Mile-Gboko-Makurdi Road: This project aims to improve transportation links within the region, facilitating trade and movement.

  • Coastal Road Projects: The South East benefits from coastal road initiatives designed to boost economic activities and accessibility.

Budgetary Allocations Reflecting Regional Inclusivity

Dr. Ugbala noted that the current administration has included numerous road projects in the South East within this year's budget, reflecting a commitment to equitable infrastructure development. He urged citizens to exercise patience and support for the government's efforts, assuring that the region stands to gain significantly from these initiatives.

Emphasis on Maintenance Culture for Sustainable Infrastructure

Advocating for a robust maintenance culture, Dr. Ugbala stressed that constructing roads is insufficient without proper upkeep. He highlighted ongoing maintenance activities, such as those on the Abakaliki-Afikpo road, where eight critical sections are receiving urgent attention.Similar efforts are evident across Abia, Enugu, and Anambra states, ensuring that all South East states benefit from sustained infrastructure improvements.

Acknowledging resource constraints, Dr. Ugbala emphasized FERMA's dedication to transparency and value for money in executing projects. He recognized the challenges in managing contractors and meeting the nation's extensive infrastructure demands but reaffirmed the agency's resolve to deliver quality results.

President Tinubu's directive for nationwide road maintenance signifies a strategic effort to enhance Nigeria's infrastructure, with particular attention to the South East region. The administration's focus on equitable development, coupled with a commitment to maintenance and transparency, sets a foundation for sustainable growth and improved quality of life for all citizens.
