Tragic Demise of EFCC Operative Halisu Sahabi: A Life Cut Short Amid Wedding Plans

In a heart-wrenching turn of events, Assistant Superintendent of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Halisu Sahabi, met an untimely death during a raid in Awka, Anambra State. 



The Fateful Operation

On a mission to apprehend suspected internet fraudsters, commonly known as "Yahoo boys," a team from the EFCC's Enugu Zonal Command conducted a raid in Awka. The operatives successfully detained several individuals and seized items including credit cards and four luxury vehicles. 

The operation took a tragic turn when the team approached the residence of Dr. Chukwuka Josiah Ikechukwu Nnamdi, a medical doctor from Ifite, Awka. Despite identifying themselves, the operatives faced resistance. Dr. Nnamdi, suspecting a threat, refused entry. The situation escalated as the EFCC team forced entry, leading Dr. Nnamdi to open fire, fatally wounding Sahabi and injuring another operative. 





Aftermath and Arrest

Following the incident, Dr. Nnamdi attempted to evade arrest by hiding in a neighbor's ceiling. Law enforcement agencies, including the police and EFCC operatives, apprehended him. The firearm used, a short pump-action gun licensed to his father, was recovered. Dr. Nnamdi claimed self-defense, a stance supported by his father. However, he remains in custody, facing potential murder charges. 

A Life Interrupted

Adding to the tragedy, family sources revealed that Sahabi was planning to marry after the upcoming fasting season. His aspirations were abruptly halted by this unforeseen calamity. 

In adherence to Islamic traditions, Sahabi's remains were transported to Sokoto State for burial. The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, reportedly facilitated the arrangements, ensuring the fallen operative received due honors. 

Official Response

The Anambra State Police Command has initiated a thorough investigation. Spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed the suspect's detention and the recovery of the firearm, assuring the public of a comprehensive inquiry. 

This incident underscores the inherent risks faced by law enforcement officers. Notably, the operatives involved lacked bulletproof vests during the operation, raising concerns about the adequacy of protective measures. 

The death of Assistant Superintendent Halisu Sahabi is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by those combating financial crimes. As investigations proceed, it is imperative to address operational safety protocols to prevent such tragedies in the future.
