University of Ibadan Students to Stage Peaceful Protest Over Prolonged UCH Power Outage

In response to an enduring power outage at the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan, the University of Ibadan Students' Union (UI SU) has announced plans for a peaceful demonstration. This decision follows the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum issued to the Federal Government, demanding immediate resolution of the blackout that has persisted for over 80 days.

The power outage at UCH has severely impacted the daily lives and academic activities of students, particularly those residing in Alexander Brown Hall and Ayodele Falase Postgraduate Hall. Residents have faced significant challenges, including difficulties accessing water, charging electronic devices, and maintaining conducive study environments. The blackout has also disrupted essential hospital services, compromising patient care and medical training.

Students' Union Ultimatum and Planned Protest

On January 13, 2025, the UI SU issued an open letter to the Federal Government, highlighting the detrimental effects of the prolonged power outage on both students and healthcare delivery at UCH.The union emphasized the fundamental right to adequate healthcare and education, urging prompt governmental intervention. The letter concluded with a seven-day ultimatum, stating that failure to address the issue would result in organized protests

With the ultimatum unmet, the Students' Union President, Aweda Bolaji, has called for a peaceful demonstration scheduled for January 22, 2025.Participants are to convene at the main gate of UCH at 7 a.m., proceeding to the Oyo State Secretariat. Bolaji expressed solidarity with affected students, stating, "We cannot watch our fellow students suffer; an injury to one is an injury to all.

Implications and Stakeholder Responses

The persistent power outage has broader implications beyond student welfare. Medical professionals at UCH have faced challenges in performing complex procedures due to unreliable electricity supply.Despite these obstacles, the hospital has managed to continue essential services, showcasing resilience amidst infrastructural deficiencies.

In response to mounting concerns, the management of UCH has apologized for the inconvenience caused by the power outages and has announced plans to provide alternative energy sources to alleviate the situation. However, the timeline for the implementation of these solutions remains unclear, leaving students and staff in a state of uncertainty.

The planned peaceful protest by University of Ibadan students underscores the urgent need for sustainable solutions to the power crisis at UCH.The situation not only hampers academic pursuits but also jeopardizes critical healthcare services. As the demonstration approaches, all eyes are on the Federal Government and UCH management to address the pressing concerns and restore normalcy to the institution.
