Vandals Sabotage Abuja's Power Infrastructure, Plunging Key Districts into Darkness
In a brazen act of sabotage, vandals have once again targeted Abuja's critical power infrastructure, leading to widespread electricity disruptions across several key districts, including Maitama, Wuse, Garki, Jabi, Life Camp, Asokoro, Utako, Mabushi, and parts of the Presidential Villa.
Extent of the Damage
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) reported that the assailants removed approximately 40 meters of 1x500mm² XLPE conductors from two 132kV transmission lines.This malicious act has severely impacted the 132kV Central Area Transmission Substation, which is pivotal in distributing electricity to the affected regions.
Impact on Abuja's Power Supply
The repercussions of this vandalism are profound, with over 60% of Abuja's power supply being compromised.Eight distribution feeders serving the Central Area have been directly affected, resulting in significant disruptions to both residential and commercial activities.
Official Response and Restoration Efforts
In response to the crisis, TCN has mobilized a dedicated team of engineers to expedite repairs and restore normalcy. Ndidi Mbah, TCN's General Manager of Public Affairs, emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, "The vandalism of this critical transmission infrastructure is suspected to have been carried out by unknown persons around the Millennium Park axis of Abuja.
A Recurring Challenge
This incident is not isolated.The nation's power infrastructure has been a recurrent target for vandals, exacerbating Nigeria's ongoing energy challenges.The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, lamented the situation, noting that even his office was affected by the outage.
