Aregbesola and Kwankwaso Hold Strategic Meeting in Lagos Ahead of 2027 Elections

Lagos, Nigeria – In a significant political development, former Minister of Interior Rauf Aregbesola and ex-Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso recently convened a high-level strategic meeting in Lagos, laying the groundwork for the 2027 general elections. This high-profile encounter is a critical step towards uniting opposition forces to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Aregbesola, who served as the governor of Osun State from 2010 to 2018 and later as Minister of Interior under former President Muhammadu Buhari, has recently distanced himself from the APC. His political group, Omoluabi Progressives, left the party citing issues such as ostracization, suspension of leaders without fair hearings, and continuous denigration of the party structure. Shortly after, the APC in Osun expelled Aregbesola over alleged anti-party activities.

Kwankwaso, a two-term governor of Kano State and former presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in the 2023 elections, has also been a vocal critic of the APC. His faction of the NNPP remains expelled from the party, but he continues to be a formidable political force.

The Meeting

The meeting, held at Aregbesola's residence in Lagos, was described as a marathon session where both leaders strategized for the 2027 elections. While the exact details of their discussions remain confidential, it is widely believed that they focused on forming a coalition to challenge the APC's dominance.

Political Realignments

This meeting is part of a broader trend of political realignments in Nigeria. In recent months, several high-profile meetings have taken place among opposition figures. Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar hosted Peter Obi, a chieftain of the Labour Party, to a breakfast meeting in Adamawa State. In January, Nasir el-Rufai, former governor of Kaduna, and other politicians met in Abuja to discuss potential alliances.

The strategic meeting between Aregbesola and Kwankwaso signals potential shifts in Nigeria's political landscape. With the 2027 elections still years away, the political arena is already evolving as key players weigh their options. The outcome of these strategic engagements could shape the country's political future and determine the direction of the opposition against the APC.

The meeting between Rauf Aregbesola and Rabiu Kwankwaso in Lagos is a pivotal moment in Nigeria's political scene. As the country gears up for the 2027 general elections, the alliances and strategies formed now will play a crucial role in shaping the political landscape. The world watches closely as Nigeria navigates these political waters, with the potential for significant changes on the horizon.
