EFCC Re-Arraigns 73-Year-Old Blind Man for Alleged N19 Million Fraud

EFCC Re-Arraigns 73-Year-Old Blind Man for Alleged N19 Million Fraud

Lagos, Nigeria– In a development that has captivated the nation, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has re-arraigned Murtala Adebayo, a 73-year-old blind man, before Justice Rahman Oshodi of the Lagos Special Offences Court, Ikeja. Adebayo is facing serious charges of allegedly defrauding a complainant of N19 million, a case that has sparked significant public interest.

Detailed Allegations and Legal Proceedings

The charges against Adebayo are rooted in fraudulent activities purportedly carried out between 2015 and 2019. The prosecution alleges that Adebayo deceitfully obtained N4.5 million from Mr. Gafar Ademolake by falsely claiming it was for three plots of land in Ogombo Ajah, Lagos. Furthermore, he is accused of collecting N5.5 million for 18 plots of land in Ayogbemi Village, Ibeju-Lekki, and two Toyota Camry cars and a Honda Accord valued at N9 million, all under false pretenses.

Originally brought before Justice Mojisola Dada on January 24, 2024, Adebayo pleaded not guilty to the charges. However, due to allegations of forged documents used to secure bail, the case was reassigned to Justice Oshodi. On January 28, 2025, Adebayo was re-arraigned and again pleaded not guilty to the allegations.

Defense and Court Rulings

Adebayo’s defense counsel, Bamidele Ogundele, requested that his client be allowed to continue enjoying the bail conditions previously granted by Justice Dada. While the prosecution, led by Sa’adatu Yabo, expressed concerns over the authenticity of the documents used to secure the earlier bail, they did not oppose the application. After reviewing the bail bond, Justice Oshodi granted Adebayo bail under the same conditions set by Justice Dada on February 12, 2024. Additionally, the court mandated that the surety enroll in the surety registration management system.

The re-arraignment of Adebayo has ignited a broader conversation about the integrity of the judicial system and the need for stringent measures to combat fraud. The case highlights the complexities faced by the EFCC in prosecuting intricate fraud cases, especially when they involve vulnerable individuals such as the elderly and visually impaired.

The ongoing legal battle involving Murtala Adebayo underscores the critical importance of vigilance and accountability in the fight against financial crimes. As the case proceeds to trial, it will be closely watched by legal experts, human rights advocates, and the general public. The outcome of this case could have significant implications for future prosecutions and the broader efforts to curb financial fraud in Nigeria.
