Former NCDC Boss Ihekweazu Appointed Acting WHO Regional Director for Africa

GENEVA, SWITZERLAND - In a significant development, Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, the former Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), has been appointed as the acting Regional Director of the World Health Organization (WHO) for Africa. This appointment was announced during the 156th session of the WHO Executive Board in Geneva, Switzerland.

A New Chapter Begins

Dr. Ihekweazu assumes the role following the completion of Dr. Matshidiso Moeti's term as the Regional Director for Africa. WHO Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus expressed strong confidence in Ihekweazu’s leadership, stating that Africa is in “capable hands” for the next four months until a new regional director is elected in May 2025.

A Distinguished Career

Dr. Ihekweazu brings over 20 years of experience in senior public health and leadership roles across various international health institutions. His career includes tenures at the South African National Institute for Communicable Diseases, the United Kingdom’s Health Protection Agency, and Germany’s Robert Koch Institute. Notably, his leadership at NCDC was pivotal in Nigeria’s response to multiple disease outbreaks, including COVID-19.

Continuing the Legacy

In her farewell message, Dr. Moeti thanked the organisation for her tenure as regional director, acknowledging the collaboration with member states and partners in strengthening health systems across Africa. She highlighted key achievements and partnerships that have contributed to health improvements on the continent.

As the acting Regional Director, Dr. Ihekweazu will lead WHO’s African regional office in addressing critical health challenges across the continent. His responsibilities include ensuring continuity in the agency’s efforts to strengthen healthcare systems, enhance emergency preparedness, and improve disease response mechanisms.

The appointment of Dr. Ihekweazu signals a transition period for the WHO Africa region as the search for a permanent regional director continues. His extensive experience and proven track record in public health make him a strong candidate to lead the region through its next phase of health initiatives.
