Nationwide Shutdown Looms as 900 KADECO Staff Face Sack

LAGOS, NIGERIA - The industrial landscape in Nigeria is on the brink of a major upheaval as the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) threatens a nationwide shutdown in response to the recent dismissal of 900 employees by the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (KADECO). This drastic measure has already crippled operations at KADECO, with no resolution in sight.

A Tense Standoff

The mass sack, which took place on January 31, 2025, has sparked outrage among workers and union leaders. The NUEE has issued a stern ultimatum, demanding the immediate reinstatement of all sacked employees by February 10, 2025. Failure to comply, they warn, will result in an escalation of the industrial crisis to a national scale.

Unfair Labour Practices

NUEE's Acting General Secretary, Dominic Igwebike, condemned the sack as a blatant disregard for the Nigeria Labour Act and ILO Convention No. 98, which protect workers' rights to organize and engage in collective bargaining. He highlighted several unfair labour practices by KADECO, including the lack of medical services, non-implementation of signed agreements, and non-remittance of pension deductions.

Impact on Operations

The ongoing unrest has severely disrupted KADECO's operations, affecting electricity distribution across the region. The company's management has promised to pay the sacked employees' benefits, but without specifying a date, further fueling the discontent.

A Call for Dialogue

In a bid to avert the looming crisis, NUEE has called for immediate dialogue with KADECO's management to address all outstanding labour issues. The union emphasizes the need for collective bargaining and a return to the status quo ante to prevent further escalation.

Public Awareness

The public has been put on notice about the potential nationwide shutdown and its implications for the already fragile state of Nigeria's electricity sector. The NUEE holds KADECO's management accountable for any disruptions that may arise from this industrial action.

As the deadline approaches, the tension between KADECO and NUEE continues to mount, with the future of Nigeria's electricity distribution hanging in the balance. The resolution of this conflict will require swift and decisive action from both parties to ensure the stability and reliability of the nation's power supply.
