PANDEF Advocates for South-South Representation in Next NNPCL Leadership
The Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) has made a compelling case for the next Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to be appointed from the South-South geopolitical zone. This call underscores the region's significant contributions to Nigeria's economy over the past six decades.
A Region's Plea for Recognition
During a recent courtesy visit to the Bayelsa State Council of Traditional Rulers in Yenagoa, PANDEF's national chairman, Ambassador Godknows Igali, emphasized the need for the South-South region to be respected and acknowledged for its pivotal role in sustaining the nation's economy. He stated, "The Niger Delta people are no troublemakers, but companies operating in the region must respect the people, whether they are offshore or onshore."
Environmental and Agricultural Development
Ambassador Igali also highlighted the urgent need for environmental cleanup in the region, which he noted may take up to 30 years due to the extensive devastation. He drew parallels between the Niger Delta's soil and that of Vietnam, suggesting that with the right support, Niger Deltans could achieve significant agricultural success. The environmental damage caused by years of oil exploration has had severe consequences, and PANDEF is calling for immediate and sustained efforts to restore the region's ecosystems.
Unity and Advocacy
PANDEF has been instrumental in unifying the voices of the Niger Delta people, ensuring their concerns and aspirations are heard at the national level. The organization has submitted a memo to President Bola Tinubu, urging him to sign the South-South Development Commission Bill into law without delay. This bill aims to establish a framework for the sustainable development of the South-South region, addressing issues such as infrastructure, education, and healthcare.
Support from Traditional Leaders
The chairman of the Bayelsa State Council of Traditional Rulers, HRM King Bubaraye Dakolo, commended PANDEF for its efforts and urged the organization to develop new strategies to bring development to the region. He also called for the establishment of a Riverine Marine Safety Corps to address the unique safety challenges faced by riverine communities. King Dakolo emphasized the importance of collaboration between traditional leaders, government, and PANDEF to achieve meaningful progress.
The Importance of Fair Representation
PANDEF's advocacy for a South-South GCEO at NNPCL highlights the broader issue of fair representation in key national institutions. The South-South region, being a major oil-producing area, has long felt marginalized in the distribution of political appointments and resources. By advocating for a leader from the region, PANDEF aims to ensure that the voices and interests of the South-South people are adequately represented at the highest levels of decision-making.
PANDEF's advocacy for a South-South GCEO at NNPCL is a testament to the region's resilience and determination to secure its rightful place in Nigeria's economic landscape. The organization's efforts to foster unity and push for development initiatives are crucial steps towards achieving a more equitable and prosperous future for the Niger Delta.
