Police Confirm Arrest of Nine Suspects in Anambra Lawmaker Justice Azuka's Murder

Anambra State, Nigeria – In a significant breakthrough, the Anambra State Police Command, in collaboration with state vigilante operatives, has apprehended nine suspects linked to the brutal murder of Justice Azuka, a respected member of the Anambra State House of Assembly. This major development follows a coordinated security operation that led to the discovery of Azuka's decomposing body on the Second Niger Bridge.

The Arrest and Investigation

The State Police Commissioner, Nnaghe Itam, confirmed the arrests during a press briefing on Friday. According to Itam, Justice Azuka, who represented Onitsha North Constituency 1, was abducted on December 24, 2024, while returning home for Christmas. His body was found by a combined security team on Thursday, prompting an immediate and intensive investigation.

The suspects, identified as Ugochukwu Onuorah (30), Ikemefuna Ossai (20), Ikenna Orugu (27), Chibuike Obiefuna (19), Chinonso Olisa (19), Chinedu Okoli (21), David Ojini (25), and Peter Sunday (20), were taken into custody after a gunfight with police operatives. During the operation, two pump-action guns were recovered, and one suspect sustained a gunshot injury.

The Suspects and Their Alleged Involvement

Among the arrested suspects, Peter Sunday stood out due to a tattoo on his chest reading "No peace 4 d Government," which authorities believe is linked to his involvement in the crime. The Commissioner also revealed that the police had successfully arrested Chidiebere Nwosu, a notorious kidnap suspect in Uruagu, Nnewi, and neutralized several of his gang members involved in attacks on police personnel.

The arrests have been hailed as a major victory for law enforcement in Anambra State, with Commissioner Itam expressing gratitude to the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and Governor Chukwuma Soludo for their support. The Commissioner assured residents that the police and other security agencies are committed to protecting lives and properties.

The incident has sparked a broader debate about the security situation in Anambra State and the need for continued vigilance and cooperation between law enforcement and the community. The arrests are seen as a step towards restoring peace and order in the region, which has been plagued by criminal activities.

The arrest of the nine suspects involved in the murder of Justice Azuka marks a significant milestone in the fight against crime in Anambra State. The collaborative efforts of the police and vigilante operatives have demonstrated the effectiveness of intelligence-led operations in apprehending criminals and bringing them to justice. As the investigation continues, the focus remains on ensuring that justice is served for Justice Azuka and his family, while also addressing the broader issues of security and safety in the region.
