President Tinubu Approves Establishment of National Paramilitary Academy to Strengthen Nigeria’s Security Infrastructure

Abuja, Nigeria – In a decisive step toward bolstering Nigeria’s security framework, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has given the green light for the establishment of a National Paramilitary Academy. This landmark initiative is set to transform the nation’s paramilitary training landscape, ensuring that officers are equipped with world-class knowledge and expertise to tackle emerging security challenges.



A Strategic Move to Enhance National Security

The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, confirmed the development in an official statement, highlighting the academy’s core mission. “There is a need to establish a degree-awarding institution where young Nigerians can be trained in paramilitary engagement,” he stated. The academy will provide structured training programs for aspiring paramilitary officers, offering them specialized education to enhance national security operations.



Aligning with International Standards

The National Paramilitary Academy is expected to operate similarly to the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), which has been instrumental in training military officers. With a curriculum designed to meet global best practices, the institution will produce highly skilled paramilitary personnel ready to handle complex security situations. Graduates will emerge as commissioned officers, bringing a new level of professionalism and operational efficiency to Nigeria’s security forces.

Boosting Correctional Facility Healthcare

As part of the government’s broader security reforms, President Tinubu has also approved the recruitment of 50 doctors and 100 nurses to enhance medical care in Nigeria’s correctional facilities. In addition, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has been directed to deploy medical professionals to correctional centers nationwide, ensuring inmates receive proper healthcare services.

Unprecedented Reforms in the Paramilitary Sector

The Tinubu administration has been proactive in addressing longstanding concerns within the paramilitary sector. In a significant move, over 53,000 paramilitary officers have been promoted between December 2023 and September 2024, a measure aimed at addressing career stagnation and boosting workforce morale.

Additionally, Nigeria’s passport issuance process has undergone a major overhaul. All visas are now processed online, allowing applicants to receive their documents within 48 to 72 hours. This efficiency-driven reform is expected to streamline operations and enhance service delivery.

The establishment of the National Paramilitary Academy signals a transformative era in Nigeria’s approach to internal security. By investing in structured, high-quality training, the government is laying the groundwork for a stronger, more capable paramilitary force.
