Public Outcry Over Ondo Deputy Governor’s N130 Million Hotel Expenditure

Akure, Nigeria – The prolonged stay of Ondo State Deputy Governor, Dr. Olayide Adelami, in hotels has sparked public concern, with reports revealing that the state has spent over N130 million on his accommodation in just one year. The issue has raised questions about government spending, transparency, and the management of official residences.

Why Is the Deputy Governor Staying in a Hotel?

Upon assuming office on February 1, 2024, Deputy Governor Adelami found the official residence in a dilapidated state, making it uninhabitable. As a result, the building was repurposed as an office space, forcing the deputy governor to reside in hotels while awaiting a permanent solution.

Public Reaction and Financial Concerns

The revelation that the government has spent over N130 million on hotel bills has triggered a wave of criticism, with many questioning the mismanagement of public funds.

Critics argue that the money could have been better spent on education, healthcare, and infrastructure. Some residents and opposition figures have described the spending as extravagant and wasteful, especially at a time when the state is facing economic challenges.

Political Backlash and Accusations

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of mismanaging state resources. The party claims that converting the deputy governor’s lodge into a computer center for the APC was a political move that has now led to unnecessary spending on hotel accommodation.

Some political analysts argue that this situation reflects broader governance issues in the state, including poor planning and lack of accountability.

Deputy Governor’s Response

Reacting to the controversy, Deputy Governor Adelami clarified that the official lodge was in a state of disrepair when he assumed office, leaving him with no choice but to seek alternative accommodation. He assured the public that the government is working on infrastructural development, citing the ongoing construction of a new governor’s lodge as a sign of their commitment.

The controversy has sparked a larger conversation about how public funds are managed in Ondo State. Many have called for a review of government policies regarding official accommodations to prevent wasteful spending in the future.

As the debate continues, the government will need to reassure the public that it is acting in the best interest of taxpayers, ensuring that state resources are used responsibly.
