Senior Police Officers Threaten IGP Egbetokun, Demand His Retirement and Call His Post-Retirement Actions Illegal

Abuja, Nigeria – In a dramatic turn of events, senior police officers in Nigeria have issued a stern ultimatum to Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun, demanding his retirement alongside theirs and declaring his post-retirement actions as illegal. This bold confrontation arises amidst allegations of age falsification and a widespread crackdown on officers who have reached the mandatory retirement age of 60 years or completed 35 years of service.

The Controversy Unfolds

The crisis erupted when the Police Service Commission (PSC) issued a directive for the immediate retirement of officers who have reached the retirement threshold. This directive is grounded in Public Service Rule No. 020908, which mandates retirement upon meeting the specified limits. However, President Bola Tinubu extended IGP Egbetokun's tenure despite him meeting the same criteria, sparking widespread controversy and discontent.

Senior Officers' Response

In response, senior officers, including former Deputy Inspectors General of Police (DIGs), Assistant Inspectors General (AIGs), and Commissioners of Police (CPs), have vehemently opposed the directive. They argue that the IGP's continued service undermines established civil service retirement regulations and sets a troubling precedent. "It's unfortunate that the Force keeps finding herself in such awkward situations," said a retired Assistant Inspector General of Police, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Legal Battles and Disciplinary Actions

The situation intensified as some affected officers resorted to legal action, challenging the PSC's method of calculating service years. The National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN) has adjourned the case until March 18, 2025, to determine the validity of the officers' claims. Meanwhile, IGP Egbetokun has established a disciplinary committee to address the issue, summoning officers to appear before it.

This standoff has significant implications for the Nigerian Police Force, raising questions about the enforcement of retirement regulations and the balance of authority between the PSC and the IGP. The controversy also highlights broader challenges of maintaining discipline and accountability within the force.

Potential Outcomes

As the legal proceedings unfold, the future of the affected senior officers and IGP Egbetokun remains uncertain. A court ruling in favor of the officers could lead to a major shake-up within the Nigerian Police Force. Conversely, if the PSC's directive is upheld, it could establish a new precedent for the enforcement of retirement regulations.

The ongoing conflict between senior police officers and IGP Egbetokun underscores the complexities of enforcing retirement regulations and the need for clear, consistent policies. As the legal battles continue, the Nigerian Police Force faces a critical test of its ability to uphold standards of integrity and accountability.
