 South-West Governors Unite in Lagos to Combat Terrorism and Food Insecurity

Lagos, Nigeria – In a landmark move to strengthen regional security and tackle rising food insecurity, governors of Nigeria’s South-West states convened in Lagos on February 13, 2025. The high-stakes meeting culminated in the formation of a Joint Surveillance and Monitoring Team, a strategic initiative aimed at countering escalating threats posed by terrorist groups, particularly the Islamic State's West Africa Province (ISWAP).

A Unified Front Against Terrorism

The South-West Governors’ Forum, comprising leaders from Lagos, Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Ekiti, and Ondo states, expressed deep concern over ISWAP’s growing presence in the region. The governors condemned any actions that could destabilize the South-West and underscored the urgent need for a coordinated response.

To reinforce security, the newly established Joint Surveillance and Monitoring Team will employ cutting-edge surveillance technology, including aerial reconnaissance systems, to enhance intelligence gathering and rapid response operations across the region.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who chairs the forum, emphasized the significance of inter-agency collaboration. “We are committed to deploying advanced technology and fostering intelligence-sharing among security agencies and local vigilante networks to protect our people from emerging threats,” he stated.

Tackling Food Insecurity Head-On

Beyond security concerns, the forum addressed the surging cost of food, exacerbated by hoarding and supply chain disruptions. To mitigate the crisis, the governors agreed to establish State Food Inflation Joint Monitoring Teams and create Aggregation Centres and Food Hubs. These initiatives aim to streamline food distribution, curb artificial price inflation, and ensure affordability for citizens.

Endorsing Federal Economic Reforms

The governors commended President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies, particularly his efforts to stabilize the exchange rate and maintain the steady supply of petroleum products. They also applauded the success of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), which has provided financial support to students across the South-West, and encouraged eligible individuals to take full advantage of the initiative.

Boosting Regional Development

As part of a broader strategy for economic growth, the governors endorsed the establishment of the South-West Development Commission (SWDC), agreeing to locate its headquarters at the historic Cocoa House in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Additionally, they lauded the Odu’a Investment Company Ltd for its effective management of regional joint assets and ongoing infrastructural projects. Notable initiatives include the redevelopment of Premier Hotel in Ibadan and the proposed revamp of Lagos Airport Hotel, key projects set to drive economic revitalization and tourism in the region.

A Call for Vigilance and Collaboration

The South-West Governors’ Forum’s resolutions mark a proactive step toward addressing two of the region’s most pressing challenges—security and food scarcity. By leveraging technology, fostering regional collaboration, and implementing strategic economic measures, the governors aim to fortify the South-West against both security threats and economic instability.

As these measures take effect, the South-West remains steadfast in its commitment to resilience, unity, and sustainable development in the face of adversity.
