WTO Chief Okonjo-Iweala Declares 2025 a Pivotal Year Amid Geopolitical Tensions


GENEVA, SWITZERLAND- World Trade Organization (WTO) Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has declared that 2025 will be a pivotal year for the organization, with global trade negotiations expected to face unprecedented challenges due to escalating geopolitical tensions.



Addressing the latest cohort of the WTO Young Professionals Programme (YPP), Okonjo-Iweala emphasized the critical nature of the upcoming year, highlighting the potential impact of ongoing conflicts and economic uncertainties on key trade issues such as fisheries subsidies, dispute settlement reforms, development, and agriculture. "We must deliver results despite the complex global landscape," she stated, urging for transparency and constructive dialogue among WTO members.


The WTO chief pointed to current geopolitical tensions, including the Russia-Ukraine war, turmoil in Palestine, and conflicts involving Israel and Hezbollah/Iran, as significant factors influencing global trade dynamics. She emphasized that these tensions add layers of complexity to negotiations, underscoring the need for diplomatic finesse and strategic collaboration.


Despite these challenges, Okonjo-Iweala remains optimistic about the organization's ability to navigate the complexities and lay a strong foundation for a successful Fourteenth WTO Ministerial Conference (MC14) in Cameroon in March 2026. She highlighted the importance of the upcoming MC14 as a milestone event that will set the tone for the future of global trade governance.


Okonjo-Iweala also addressed the need for modernizing the WTO's approach to trade negotiations. She called for innovative solutions to bridge gaps between member countries, especially those related to digital trade and environmental sustainability. "Adapting to the digital age and prioritizing sustainable practices are imperative for the WTO's relevance in the 21st century," she noted.



The declaration comes at a time when the global trade landscape is increasingly fragmented, with rising protectionism and economic uncertainties posing substantial risks. Okonjo-Iweala called for a measured and collaborative approach to address these challenges, emphasizing the broader impact of the WTO's work in fostering trade cooperation that benefits both people and the planet.
