Alaafin-Designate Oba Akeem Owoade Returns from Canada to Begin Coronation Rites in Oyo

The historic city of Oyo is set to witness the grand ascension of its new monarch as Oba Akeem Owoade, the Alaafin-designate, returns from Canada to commence traditional rites ahead of his official coronation. His arrival marks the beginning of an extensive process steeped in Yoruba royal traditions, symbolizing continuity, heritage, and spiritual authority.

After spending nearly two months in Canada, Oba Owoade touched down at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, to a rousing welcome. Accompanied by key figures of the Oyo Mesi (kingmakers), royal emissaries, and well-wishers, his return is seen as a pivotal moment for the historic Oyo Empire.

With his arrival, the sacred rites of kingship officially begin, ushering in a new phase of traditional and spiritual preparations before he ascends the revered throne as the 45th Alaafin of Oyo.

Path to Coronation: Traditional Rites and Rituals

The Alaafin's installation is not merely a ceremonial event but a deeply spiritual and cultural process that involves multiple time-honored traditions, each reinforcing the divine legitimacy of the new ruler.

1. Visits to Ancestral Shrines

As part of his royal obligations, Oba Owoade will embark on pilgrimages to sacred sites, paying homage to past Alaafins, seeking divine blessings, and participating in rituals that strengthen his connection with Yoruba deities and ancestors.

  • Egungun Grove: A sacred space where he will honor ancestral spirits.
  • Oranmiyan Staff: A symbolic point of contact with the progenitor of the Oyo dynasty.
  • Koso Temple: A site of powerful initiations and purification rites.

These visits, often held at night, involve ritual prayers, symbolic sacrifices, and consultations with Ifa priests to guide the new king’s reign.

2. Ipebi Seclusion: Royal Training and Spiritual Preparation

The next crucial phase in his journey is the Ipebi, a period of seclusion and initiation inside the Alaafin’s Palace.

During this intensive retreat, he will:

  • Learn historical and cultural secrets of the Oyo Kingdom.
  • Undergo spiritual purification rites supervised by the Oluawo (chief Ifa priest).
  • Receive royal wisdom from the Oyo Mesi and council of elders.
  • Study statecraft, diplomacy, and warrior traditions to embody the full essence of kingship.

The Ipebi is where an Alaafin transforms from a prince into a ruler, receiving the wisdom of his ancestors while strengthening his spiritual bond with Sango, the Yoruba god of thunder and patron deity of the Alaafin dynasty.

3. Koso Chamber: The Final Royal Initiation

Following the Ipebi rites, the Alaafin-designate will undergo the final spiritual anointment in the Koso Chamber—a sacred enclosure where he will be officially crowned with the royal Ade (crown).

This phase involves:

  • Coronation Blessings: Conducted by the Oyomesi and Ifa priests.
  • Oaths of Kingship: Swearing allegiance to Oyo traditions and the gods.
  • Symbolic Sacrifices: Offering prayers for peace, prosperity, and longevity.

At the end of this stage, Oba Akeem Owoade will emerge as the fully sanctified and recognized Alaafin, ready to lead his people with divine authority.

Legal Disputes Over the Throne

While the coronation process moves forward, legal battles over the legitimacy of Oba Owoade’s selection persist.

Two high-profile lawsuits, led by Prince Lukman Gbadegesin and Ismaila Owoade, challenge the appointment process, citing alleged breaches of the Alaafin Chieftaincy Declaration of 1961.

Governor Seyi Makinde’s Stance

Despite these disputes, Governor Seyi Makinde has dismissed claims of irregularities, asserting that the selection was legally sound and in line with due process. His administration remains firm in its decision, emphasizing that no legal opposition will overturn the will of the kingmakers and the people.

The Oyo State government is also actively ensuring that the transition remains peaceful, stressing the importance of unity and continuity in traditional institutions.

Grand Coronation: April 5, 2025

With the sacred rites in motion, all eyes are set on the grand coronation ceremony scheduled for April 5, 2025.

What to Expect at the Coronation

  • A Royal Procession: The Alaafin will parade through Oyo town in full regalia.
  • Blessings from Yoruba Monarchs: Kings from across Yorubaland will attend.
  • Traditional Music and Performances: Aso-oke-clad drummers, dancers, and praise singers will celebrate the event.
  • State and National Dignitaries: Political leaders, historians, and dignitaries will be present.

The coronation will not just mark the installation of a new Alaafin—it will symbolize the enduring strength and cultural legacy of the Oyo Empire.

As Oba Akeem Owoade ascends the throne, expectations are high for a revitalized Oyo Kingdom. His modern outlook, combined with his deep respect for tradition, is seen as a perfect balance to lead the kingdom into a new era of economic, cultural, and social development.

His reign is anticipated to:

  • Strengthen cultural tourism, drawing visitors to Oyo’s historic sites.
  • Promote Yoruba heritage and language preservation.
  • Foster economic growth through partnerships with local and international investors.
  • Ensure unity among Yoruba monarchs and traditional rulers.

The dawn of a new Alaafin is upon us, and with it comes the promise of progress, stability, and cultural pride for the people of Oyo.

Oba Akeem Owoade’s journey to the throne is not just a personal milestone—it is a momentous chapter in Yoruba history. As he prepares to assume the revered position of Alaafin of Oyo, the kingdom stands at the crossroads of tradition and modernity, ready to embrace a new era of cultural resurgence and leadership.
