PDP Governors Debunk Claims of Endorsing El-Rufai-Obi Ticket for 2027 Elections

As Nigeria’s political landscape heats up ahead of the 2027 presidential election, a wave of speculation has emerged, claiming that a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors is backing an El-Rufai-Obi ticket. However, the PDP Governors’ Forum has categorically dismissed these claims, calling them baseless fabrications aimed at causing discord within the party.

PDP Governors Dismantle Endorsement Rumors

In a decisive statement, the PDP Governors’ Forum, led by Bauchi State Governor Senator Bala Mohammed, refuted reports suggesting that five PDP governors had thrown their weight behind a joint ticket featuring Nasir El-Rufai, former Kaduna State Governor, and Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate.

According to the forum’s Director-General, Dr. Emmanuel Agbo, these rumors are the handiwork of political saboteurs attempting to derail the PDP’s progress. He stressed that:

“The PDP Governors’ Forum is not associated with any individual or group pushing for an El-Rufai-Obi presidential ticket. This is nothing but a calculated distraction aimed at creating division within our ranks.”

Attempt to Undermine PDP’s Unity

The PDP insists that such claims are part of a broader strategy by "negative forces and their agents" who aim to weaken opposition parties and pave the way for a one-party system in Nigeria. According to the statement, those behind the false claims are seeking to erode public confidence in the PDP and create unnecessary tension.

Rather than engage in premature discussions about 2027 presidential candidates, the PDP governors reaffirmed their commitment to national development, good governance, and internal party democracy. They emphasized that the party remains focused on addressing economic hardships, insecurity, and governance failures under the current administration.

The governors reiterated that the PDP is undergoing reconciliation efforts to consolidate its strength, ensuring it remains a viable alternative for Nigerians in the next general elections.

Zoning Debate: The Battle for Regional Representation

A key point of contention within the PDP is the issue of zoning, with political heavyweights weighing in on which region should produce the party’s next presidential candidate.

  • Push for a Southern Candidate:
Dr. Adetokunbo Pearse, a prominent PDP figure from Lagos State, has urged the party to adhere to its zoning principle and field a southern presidential candidate in 2027. He argues that failing to do so could alienate voters and weaken the party’s chances.

  • Call for Equitable Representation:
A coalition of PDP support groups has echoed this stance, advocating for strict adherence to zoning principles as a way to restore the party’s credibility. They argue that zoning ensures fairness and strengthens electoral prospects.

  • Bode George’s Warning:
Chief Bode George, a former PDP Deputy National Chairman, has issued a stern warning against presenting a northern candidate in 2027. He believes that disregarding zoning could lead to electoral disaster, potentially sidelining the PDP from national relevance.

While speculation over candidates will persist, PDP leaders are focused on fortifying party structures, engaging stakeholders, and refining campaign strategies. The party recognizes that to reclaim power in 2027, it must:

Present a Strong, Unified Front – Any internal division could cost the party its chances against a formidable ruling party.
Address National Challenges – Nigerians are increasingly demanding solutions to economic downturns, insecurity, and governance inefficiencies.
Engage in Grassroots Mobilization – Winning elections isn’t just about big names; it’s about resonating with the electorate at every level.

As the 2027 elections approach, the PDP faces a crucial test. Will it prioritize internal unity, uphold democratic values, and present a candidate that resonates with Nigerians? Or will distractions like the El-Rufai-Obi rumor create rifts within its ranks?

One thing is certain—the battle for 2027 has already begun, and only a well-organized, strategic PDP can pose a real challenge to the ruling party.
