Bayelsa's Former Governor Demonstrates Solidarity Amid Political Tensions in Rivers State
April 11, 2025 – Bayelsa State – Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, former Governor of Bayelsa State and current lawmaker, led a high-profile delegation to Rivers State in a significant show of support for Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara, amidst ongoing political instability in the region.
The visit, aimed at reinforcing the longstanding ties between the two Niger Delta states, came at a time when political tensions in Rivers State had reached a critical point. With issues ranging from pipeline vandalism to constitutional disputes within the state assembly, the need for unity and mutual understanding has never been more urgent.
Strengthening Ties Between Bayelsa and Rivers
During the visit, Senator Dickson reiterated the inseparable bond between Bayelsa and Rivers States. He emphasized their shared historical, cultural, and economic interests, stressing that challenges faced by one state often impact the other. Dickson’s remarks come in the wake of the successful resolution of the 2024 Soku oil well dispute, an event that restored peace and cooperation between the two states.
"At times like this, we must support each other," said Dickson. "Our relationship goes beyond politics. It is about the well-being of our people and the progress of the Niger Delta."
Political Turmoil in Rivers State
Rivers State has been in the spotlight due to rising political instability. In March 2025, President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in the state, citing escalating violence and political discord, leading to the suspension of Governor Fubara, his deputy, and the entire legislature. A retired vice admiral was appointed as the interim administrator to restore order.
This unprecedented action by the federal government followed a series of constitutional disputes within the state assembly, where lawmakers accused the governor of failing to adhere to necessary budgetary procedures.
A Call for Unity and Constitutional Resolution
Senator Dickson, while in Rivers, voiced his commitment to resolving political disputes through legal and constitutional means rather than resorting to executive interventions. "It is essential that we resolve our issues within the bounds of the constitution," he said. "Violence and instability must never be the path we choose."
The South-South Governors’ Forum has also expressed concern over the constitutionality of the state of emergency declaration, calling for careful deliberation before such measures are taken.
Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State, who was present during the visit, also expressed his unwavering support for Governor Fubara’s leadership, highlighting the importance of continued peace and collaboration. Governor Diri commended the leadership displayed in resolving the oil well dispute and called for sustained cooperation between the two states to foster mutual growth.
"We must continue to work together for the good of our people and the development of our region," Diri added.
The visit by Senator Henry Seriake Dickson and his delegation serves as a reminder of the strong and enduring ties between Bayelsa and Rivers States. At a time of political uncertainty, these gestures of solidarity are crucial in ensuring the stability and future prosperity of the Niger Delta region.
